The Beginner's Guide
Hello there! I'm Bardothren, a mod of the Underground, and I'm here to tell you how to handle yourself in a mafia game.
The first thing to keep in mind is we're all here to have fun. That's why it's absolutely imperative to betray and backstab as many people as humanly possible. Everyone else will be trying the same thing, so watch your back, and your front, and your appendix too. People can and will stab you anywhere you're vulnerable, especially if you're in the way of their victory. So, if you're a member of the Town, or an innocent player, your goal is to kill off all of the evil Mafia members. If you're one of the Mafia, your goal is to outnumber the Town. And if you happen to be a Third Party player, you could have all sorts of win conditions.
The next thing is to know how and when you can brutally murder your fellow mafia players. Mafia games are split into two phases, Day and Night. During the Day Phase, every player casts a vote on who to lynch. During the Night Phase, players can use Night Actions, if they have any. These actions include investigating the alignment of players, protecting players from death, killing players, blocking other Night Actions, and so on. If you have a Night Action, instructions on how to use it will be included with the role details.
That's the bare-bones outline of a mafia game. There's a wide variety of variations on the theme, including stats and hit points, wacky roles, cool themes, adventure elements, and so on. If you're new here, I recommend signing up for a Vanilla Game first - games made to ease people into the way we play on this forum. That said, nothing's stopping you from beating gimmepie in Joker Mafia IV.
If you want more information, I've compiled a list of common mafia terms here. It would also be helpful to look at the Underground rules. And lastly, we have a discord chat that we use for mafia groups and general conversation. Feel free to hop into the UG Discord Chat with this invite.
Alright, good luck, have fun, and I would appreciate it if you could give me that knife in your appendix. I'll need it to stab the next rookie that comes along.
