Guardians of Eleste Once the world had been at war and Eleste had been several smaller nations under the thumb of an evil dictator. When an allied force defeated the villain, the small nations banded together and their union gave rise to the nation that would soon become a superpower.
Now the world looks to Eleste as an example of prosperity, it’s continued success by virtue of its diversity, thriving economy and peaceful society. Eleste has maintained a policy of neutrality for 160 years now and crime is at an all time low. At the centre of this peace are The Guardians of Eleste - powerful elite mages who act as a law enforcement agency within the city. The Guardians The Guardians are an active agency of the government under the command of the Sorcerer General. The central headquarters lies in the capital city of Diona with every major city in Eleste housing a branch of the agency.
At the age of 16, people are eligible to apply for the Guardian Academy in Diona. Those who pass the preliminary testing that takes place across the nation then flock to Diona to undertake the academy’s rigorous entrance exams and upon passing enter the Guardian curriculum, which consists of higher education classes, combat and procedural training as well as limited active duty.
Only those who display truly exemplary ability become full guardians and can begin working the truly dangerous assignments and working up through the ranks. Your Character So, where do you come in? You take on the role of a young person who has passed the preliminary testing and made your way to Diona to take on the final exams. Whatever your reasons, you have chosen to take on the mantle of Guardian of Eleste. Over the course of the RP your character will undergo many trials and tribulations, how they grow as a result will be up to you. Magic Yes, this is an urban fantasy RP and thus there is magic. Magic in the universe containing Eleste however, is very specific. While there is a great range of effects magic can create, each mage is limited to a very limited area of that spectrum. For example, your magic might revolve around the creation or manipulation of flame or it might relate to distortion of the senses. Just about anything within their part of the spectrum is available to a mage but nothing beyond. In addition, mages require a specific talisman or talismans to activate their magic. For example, in order to make use of his fire magic our character from the previous example might require a candle (although talismans are not always this on the nose). As an added bonus, mages can learn to channel their magic through their bodies to enhance their physical strength, speed and durability making them capable of astounding athletic feats. The way a person’s magic manifests is often a reflection of who they are as a person. Diona Diona is a vast, sprawling urban metropolis famous for its stunning architecture and expansive train network that emanates from the imposing central station. The city has everything you could want - bustling shopping districts, an active nightlife, many entertainment venues, comfortable living and even well maintained parks and libraries. It is also the political capital of Eleste and is considered one of the safest places in the world to live because of the enormous guardian presence there.
That’s not to say Diona doesn’t have it’s issues though. Living in Diona is often very expensive and the more serious crimes that are conducted are usually the responsibility of organised syndicates that operate in the shadows and have far reaching influence.
The RP This RP is a semi-sandbox RP taking place primarily within Diona with the imposing Guardian Academy serving as a central location to the cast. You’ll have a lot of freedom in how you develop your stories, however the overall plot of the RP will be broken into arcs with objectives that will need to be met. It is worth noting that arcs will not always follow on from immediately after the previous in the chronology.
The world of Eleste is one of my own creation, and whilst I have aimed to keep it unique, it is also designed to pay homage to the creations that have influenced me. In particular for Eleste, the influences were typical shonen series, crime and political dramas and carefully formulated magic and power systems. That means that you can expect story arcs to be obviously influenced by these sources and means you have my permission to go a bit mad with the action scenes and personalities (within reason). Sign-Up sheet Name: Age: 16-25 is the bracket for acceptance into the Academy. Gender:
Appearance: If you use an image, please still include a brief written description. Guardians can dress however they please in their off-time but when on-duty or attending classes are expected to be well-dressed.
Personality:
Magic: How does your character’s magic manifest? What is their talisman? How do they use their powers in combat?
Weaponry: While it is not required to carry weapons, more than half of all Guardians compliment their abilities with various weapons like firearms, blades or staves.
History: Just a brief bit of information about where your character comes from and why they’ve ended up where they have. Rules - All PW rules apply
- GM word is law
- Don’t godmod or bunny
- I won’t set exact post dates but keep up with the arc and stay in regular contact with the group.
- I encourage you to to be creative with what you come up with for your characters.
- Have fun!

Clarence King
Age: 18 Gender: Male
Appearance: Clarence is a dark skinned young man that stands at about 5’10” tall. He has an athletic build with lithe features and is neither enormously well-built nor weak. His frizzy brown hair is neatly style and worn with a small braid at the back and he is always clean shaven. His darker skin tone is offset by grey eyes and a “glowing” smile.
Clarence is always extremely well-groomed and even before signing up for the Guardians of Eleste tended towards being similarly well-dressed on account of his upbringing. He is usually seen wearing dark coloured suits over shirts with deep colours and patterns and with a complimenting tie. When he wants to look a bit more casual, he loses the tie and jacket and loosens his collar. A single silver earring dangles from his right ear.
Personality: Clarence is the sort of person who seems confident and composed, perhaps even a little arrogant. Underneath the surface however is a different story. He presents this calm and comfortable persona for two reasons.
When you break through the veneer, Clarence is nervous and unconfident and full of insecurities. He grew up suffocated by pressure and too aware of the differences he had with some of his peers. He learned to put up his facade of cool confidence to shield himself from those who would take advantage of his doubts.
Additionally, Clarence is hard working and determined with a strong desire to be independent and to make something of himself as a member of society. He holds true to the character he plays because he desperately wishes to become the person he pretends to be.
Magic: Clarence’s magic is based around the creation of portals - either linking to one another or as entrances to pocket dimensions with coins serving as his talismans. He can imbue a coin with his magic and then use it to spawn a portal even if he doesn’t maintain physical contact passed imbuement with portals lasting longer the longer he is able to maintain contact with the coin. This magic doesn’t have much offensive potential on its own, but clarence has developed a crafty fighting style around clever placement of portals.
Weaponry: Generally, Clarence’s main weapon when he uses one is the handgun he wears at his waist. He is also sometimes seen with a bag containing a pocket dimension filled with alternatives.
History: Clarence grew up in the city of Santi, a peaceful coastal location known for its booming tourist industry and big business. The youngest child born into a business dynasty, the pressure was on for Clarence from the moment he left the womb.
As Clarence grew older, he became more and more aware of the difference between his own status and that of his peers. He learned how much harder their lives are, how much harder they and their families had to work and how things that were easy for him to achieve through his wealth and status were hard for others. He started to resent the idea of succeeding through his family’s prosperity and became self-conscious of his socio-economic status. He felt like he didn’t deserve what he had when there were those who worked harder who had less.
He resolved to make something of himself and spent the next few years training his mind and body extensively. As soon as he reached eighteen and was legally and adult, he took his savings and applied to become a guardian, getting disowned in the process.

Lyle Dunne Murphy Age: 22 Appearance: Standing firmly over 6 feet with a long and athletic build, Lyle is often a focal point of a room, cutting an imposing first impression. While he does not broad shoulders, Lyle's long arms and legs make up for it, giving him more than enough room to intimidate others or command attention. Combine that with his smoking addiction, narrow gray-blue eyes and perpetual scowl, he does not exude kindness, keeping people at a fair distance instead. He completes the visage of rough and rugged with long, wavy and unkempt hair perched on the top of his head, with many loose strands framing and covering his otherwise pale features. While lacking in distinguished marks, Lyle's nose does tell the story of several injuries, particularly healing roughly over a history of breaks. Lyle prefers practical over presentation. Lyle is rarely dressed in anything formal, favoring a comfortable pair of blue jeans, dark shirt and a bomber jacket with fur lining. Justified as keeping him flexible and quick to act (while also adaptable to the environment), Lyle does this primarily out of a desire to not impress others and "live his life" in comfort. While he does not make much of use of accessories, Lyle does often carry a pair of sunglasses with him (should the climate and weather deem it appropriate), and is never seen without a pair of dog-tags dangling around his neck. Personality: To say that Lyle "marches at the beat of his own drum" would be perhaps the most apt aphorism to describe him. Earnest and naive as a child, jealous and spiteful as a pre-teen, overcompensating and toxic as a teenager, Lyle has chosen to be distant and pensive as a young man, doing what he feels the best idea at the time. This does, on occasion, come off as apathy as Lyle rarely has a committed opinion at any given time, lacking any conviction to the greater struggles that define the world. However, it is because that Lyle has learned in his life that balance and going with the natural flow of life should be the ultimate goal, and that few things truly justify any strong feelings. Adopting what he feels is a relatively profound philosophy, Lyle adheres to a form of adaptable, natural pragmatism. In his mind, once the dust is settled, nature will find a way to work itself out for better or for worse. That being said, Lyle does believe in some shred of good in the world and believes that the world and its people should aim for a sense of peace rather than a sense of war, and subsequently would rather live in a safe world over a dangerous one. Lyle, above all, is concerned with his own well-being and that of his friends, family and country. He will treat others in a distant, but generally polite manner to those that they consider friends and allies, but will only act maliciously against those who disrespect him. For the rest, he does not care. Furthermore, he does not wish for ill will to come upon others, but will not get worked up if does happen, attributing it to the way things work. This can come off as cold and unfeeling, but Lyle will quickly counter that for everyone to work in balance, good and evil must both exist in constant struggle. Lyle tends to remain nonjudgmental and uncommitted to any moral, legal, or philosophical system aside from his own, being almost offended by those whole heartedly commit to something they barely understand. It is not that Lyle do lacks interest, ambition, or passion, but rather he values his own well being and those of his immediate friends and family above everything else. Lyle acts on his own volition and what he feels will most immediately benefit himself, and the world around him at the time. As a result, he keeps himself flexible in all ways of life, choosing to do his best to remain self reliant, fair and pragmatic in a world that challenges him daily. Magic: Property Absorption: Lyle has the ability to absorb and replicate the properties of any matter (solid, liquid and/or gas) that he touches and replicate those properties into any form or use that he sees fit. Lyle does not transform into the property per say, but rather takes on its properties within his own physical form. This means, in essence, that he takes on another piece of matter's strengths and weaknesses, as well as replicates its own relationship with the environment around him. Lyle prefers to adapt the properties of solids, better that they are easier to understand and replicate, but can absorb the properties of other forms of matter as well. Lyle can also take on the properties of multiple objects, however, this feat is far more difficult and requires greater skill and working knowledge of the properties in question (such as are they two solids, or a solid and a liquid and/or how do these two properties work together (oil and water for example). Lyle, in this case, theoretically can create new forms of matter for his own use. Property Adaption: If not already implied, Lyle's magic comes with a side effect in how he adapts and replicates the form. Lyle, through replicating the matter, gains all the strengths and weaknesses of the matter. Therefore, Lyle gains immunities and vulnerabilities (fire weakened or defeated by water, for example. but immune to heat), but Lyle gains the physical increases and weaknesses to. Lyle has found that, especially with solids, that his strength and durability is directly proportional to the material absorbed. For example, absorbing the property of concrete (his go to in tight positions) gives him a dramatic boost in strength and durability, however, absorbing steel makes him even stronger and tougher. Paper, respectfully, makes him pitiful and weak, despite beating rock in rock-paper-scissors. Talisman: His father's dog tags seem to resonate with his magic the best, and he has subsequently bonded his magic to that. Weaponry: Lyle does not carry any weapons with him. This is both out of preference and capability. Lyle, growing up downtrodden until only recently, learned to fight with whatever he could get his hands on. Lyle, therefore, fancies himself incredibly adaptable and able to make anything a weapon of necessity. His magic only enhanced that flexibility and he prefers to go into a fight unarmed and use whatever he can get his hands on in multiple ways, keeping any sort of fight as unpredictable for his opponent as it is for him. History: Being a military brat is never easy, and Lyle learned this the hard way. Born to a father serving in the armed forces and a mother working as a local police officer as the younger child of two, Lyle lived in admiration of his hard working parents. In particular, Lyle worshipped the noble efforts of his father, who defended Eleste out of genuine respect for the country and its efforts to the best it could be. Doing his best to walk in his father's footsteps and bond with him as a youth, Lyle's respect only grew over time, especially as his father made a concentrated effort to be home more as he changed careers to join his wife as a local police officer. Sharing stories and "training" the young boy, Lyle became quite close to his father. But then, Neil commanded the center of attention. Being a few years older, Neil became to shine as he found his rhythm in school. Over time, Neil proved to be the golden child, being more intelligent and naturally gifted than Lyle ever was. Neil was, in particular, was naturally gifted in arts and culture, being an exceptional writer and musical artist. Neil dominated the family's attention, with his tutoring and talent needing all the nurturing his parents could afford. As a result, time festered like an open wound, and Lyle became increasingly envious of Neil. Lyle lacked any natural gifts, outside of a being capable athlete and somewhat clever. Naturally, he became the neglected trouble-maker, acting out in any way to get some attention. As much as his father, mother and Neil attempted to calm Lyle down, the efforts were often for naught. High school only exasperated things as Lyle became increasingly toxic, beginning to smoke and drink at an early age. His grades and talents began to slip and he would only come home every few days for a change of clothes and maybe a meal. Lyle did gradually become self reliant, getting a job and living between various girlfriends, though no relationship lasted more than a few months. Lyle's belligerence between his family turned into quiet neglect, as Neil and his mother effectively disowned Lyle due to his self destructive behavior. His father, though, never gave up on Lyle. Unofficially, Lyle's father would give the young man money if he needed it and always let Lyle back in while the boy was in a slump, between jobs or between girlfriends. The help wasn't always wanted, but Lyle never said "No" to his father, as he respected the older man too much. It was around the time that Lyle's abilities began to emerge as well. His father kept the secret, giving Lyle the most profound advice he ever received: "It is up to you, and you alone, to choose to how to live your life. Be a hero. Be a villain. Be human. It is up to you, and you alone. As long as you fight, and fight hard, for something that you believe in." That made the next few years tough. While on a dangerous mission dealing with the internal strife that occasionally plagued Eleste, mere weeks before his retirement, Lyle's father was killed in action. The sudden nature shook him dramatically, and for a time, Lyle was on speaking terms with his family. However, Lyle did not stay long. Reflecting on his life, Lyle firmly decided that he would serve in his father's steps. Redirecting all his anger and contempt in his life, Lyle trained and reapplied his self. He took up boxing, private tutoring and mediation in order to calm his internal strife. He decided to become guardian, to hone the one secret that he kept from everyone, except his father.

Name: Gordon Melial Arte Age: 21 Gender: Male Appearance: In his free time, Gordon openly wears black, leather shorts which are cut halfway up his thigh. The man constantly wears a black tunic, which could almost be seen as a dress that reaches to his ankles and snaps up in the front with brass hooks and rings. He also wears a pair of polished black boots, and thick rimmed glasses for his nearsightedness - which become unnecessary the second that his magical powers are activated. If you were to momentarily look at Gordon, you might think that he was sickly ill, as his skin is a pale white color and his blonde hair is cut into a shaggy bob style. Personality: Cold. Quiet. Constantly zoning out while others are speaking to relive past events. Quick learner, although still not quite so to rank in the upper echelons of his class due to his relative disinterest. Constantly in search of some greater meaning and prefers to study and learn what they want and when they feel like learning it. Believes that the truth can be found in the flesh rather than the spirit. Magic: Organic matter manipulation. When Gordon stabs himself with his talisman, the item fuses with his body and changes the way that his body itself functions. His bones shatter into thousands of pieces and are in a constant state of touching, but also not touching at the same time. Gordon can easily manipulate his own body to do just about whatever he pleases it to, although its limited to whats actually part of his body. he can detach parts of himself down to the sub-cellular level (the mitochondria doesn't have to be the power house of the cell if it's not in the cell anymore) and can completely change his shape, forcing the bones to re-position themselves or even rebuild themselves into entirely new structures which better fit the form that he's wanting to create. Muscles and other organs also follow the same logic. As long as he has the proper parts within himself, he can even create entirely new organs out of whatever is inside of him. All that being said, he also has the ability to bring other organic materials into himself and use them as if they were a part of his own body. Right now its limited to basic plant life (grass, flowers, etc.), small animals, insects, and other non-magical humans. In time, he may grow to have better control of these powers and what he can take into himself, but for now he's limited to some of the more basic organic structures. it should also be noted that for the moment, whatever he takes into himself while his magic is activated cannot remain inside of his body once his powers turn off. This may change at a later time, or it might not. Weaponry: The only thing which could be considered a weapon that Gordon wields is his talisman, which takes on the form of a bone dagger. However, the weapon is only for the ritualistic activation of his magical abilities and not for any real combat purpose. History: Gordon was born to a struggling magical family who refused to use their powers for any reason. His mother possessed the ability to manipulate plant life, while his father could control the entirety of his body at will. His parents had at one time been part of the military force, but grew to hate themselves and their positions the more that they used their abilities to subdue and hurt or even kill others. When Gordon was born, his mother died, causing his father to become deeply depressed. After only a year, Gordon's father - Being an overly superstitious man - attempted to kill his son before his powers could manifest and mature, believing that they would be the cause for much more death. However, the attempt on the child's life failed, and Gordon's father disappeared from this world, leaving Gordon alone to fend for himself. The child fell into the darkness of the city, being taken in by the owner of a brother and raised as a drug mule for a crime ring until he was sixteen. Two weeks before the boys seventeenth birthday, he was taken out of the drug ring that he'd been trapped in for his entire life. A certain deal began to go south when the buyer placed an ancient looking knife in Gordon's hand instead of the cash he was supposed to be offering up. The man mysteriously disappeared, but the knife quickly showed itself to be more than it seemed. The weapon fused with Gordon's body and caused him to begin to change shape uncontrollably. Fifteen years without a conduit - without the ability to use his magical abilities - and when at last it found it's way back to him he lacked the ability to properly control it. Gordon rushed back to his hideout, his body constantly shifting with each step that he took, completely lacking a true form. The second the boy came into sight of the hideout, he was assaulted by the guards which were posted around it. Nobody knew that Gordon was magical. Nobody knew that Gordon could possibly look this way. To them, he was a stranger trying to attack their base of operations. After a few minutes of fending off the guards as best as he could without hurting them, he did what was only natural. Gordon lashed back at his attackers, killing them as quickly as they came. After only an hour, the entire drug ring including the leader behind it - his adoptive father - had all fallen to him. It felt natural. After the killing had subsided, Gordon sat on a pool of his mentors blood, staring at his lifeless eyes. Something began to stir inside of him, and Gordon picked up the dismembered head and pressed it's mouth against his. The act felt right... natural... but, he wasn't sure for what reason. Something inside told him he'd have to experience more of it... more of what though, he wasn't sure. Gordon spent the next two years of his life trying to find that feeling once more. The boy lurked through the shadows that he'd been raised in, taking advantage of former clients and the unsuspecting alike. He killed numerous men and women, but also partook in even more numerous physical acts as he tried to reignite the fire within himself that he'd felt that night. Eventually, he ran into the guardians. As his interactions with them continued to grow, he began to harbor a sort of admiration for them. Slowly he drifted away from his criminal acts and found himself simply observing a number of different men and women within their ranks until finally...

Name: Roran Áskell
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Appearance: Roran stands at 73 inches tall with a trim, fit figure awarded to him by a rigorous exercise regimen. His face is 'gracefully angular' and what most would consider fairly handsome, with a slightly sharp Greek nose, a strong but pointed chin and upturned, almond eyes with silvery blue irises. His dark auburn hair is just past shoulder-length and parted down the middle, tied into a ponytail in the back while being left to frame his face in the front. There is a small dusting of freckles on each of Roran's cheeks, as well as a small bump on the bridge of his nose from being broken in the past. Roran also has numerous scars on his body, especially his arms, though the only one visible most of the time is a small scar across the tip of his chen over which no facial hair will grow.
The young man isn't one to think about fashion much when he doesn't have a substantial reason but was taught to have a certain understanding of it to so he generally sticks to a few outfits that can fit most situations. The most common way to see Roran dressed is in a cherry red sports coat, left unbuttoned over a white cotton button-up dress shirt with a black tank top for an undershirt beneath it all, black slacks covering his legs and black steel-toed Hiro boots for his feet, all fitted.
Personality: Roran seems to only really be committed to two things in this life: Gaining more mastery over his magic and doing well at the Guardian Academy...which will bring him more mastery over his magic. He is overall a friendly person, speaking to others easily and warmly. Roran nearly always speaks his mind on the things around him whether most would consider it appropriate or not with seemingly little concern for the consequences of his words. In truth the student is nearly always assessing everything around him to the best of his ability, the way everything seems to slide off of him like water off of a duck makes it difficult to tell how seriously he's taking any given situation. Despite having a certain code of honor he adheres strictly to when fighting Roran still seems to have little in the way of either pride or shame, being more than willing to admit to or even mock his mistakes as well as freely showing fear or nervousness at most threats if he does indeed see them as a threat. Though this all appears playful, beneath it Roran is his own harshest critic, mentally rebuking himself for every mistake and throwing all his effort into growing as a person.
Few things break through the mask Roran wears during his everyday life, in fact, they can be counted on one's hand: People he's strongly physically or romantically attracted to, the thought of hurting someone he doesn't believe deserves it with his magic or failing to protect them and people doing things he genuinely finds horrific right in front of him. The deal with girls is a sad side effect of the way his parents groomed him to handle romance and building a family, he heavily disagrees with their ideas but they were drilled into his head enough as a boy to be ever-present in the back of his mind. As for the fear of others...it's a mistake he's made before and he's never gotten over it. The rest is simply a result of how important his morals are to him. Roran is intelligent and quick-witted, he has to be to use his magic with any level of competency, sadly he's also quite stubborn and has a very hard time letting go of any goal or argument without being convinced he really is in the wrong, as well as being quite competitive.
Magic: Gravity Zones
Roran's magic is to create areas of effect where gravity functions as he wishes it to and his Talismans are metal spheres. He has to decide the set of rules a zone follows when he first creates it as after they're activated they function autonomously, his only active control from then on being when he wants to turn them off if they don't simply die out from him getting too far away. Thankfully the limitation has a strength to it as well, Roran only has to expend the energy to create a Gravity Zone when he first makes forms it, with the cost of each zone being decided by its size and intensity. The zones can be either rectangular or spherical and they must be attached to something he has directly touched while touching a talisman. Otherwise Roran has to directly touch wherever he wants to create a Gravity Zone. He can either attach a zone to a specific part of something he touches - I.E making a small zone on one side of something that continually pushes it in a direction to propel it - or center it around something. However, if Roran centers a zone around an object or creature the zone cannot affect what the zone is actually centered around. For instance, if he made a person the center of a zone he could not simply make a bubble of intense gravity centered around them and crush them but any object light enough for the intensity of the zone would be pulled towards them.
Though Roran cannot change the rules of or move a Gravity Zone after its activation other than to deactivate it, he can delay activation of a zone after he's created one, allowing him to make traps out of them and possibly other deceptive uses. Gravity Zones can overlap as long as the user has enough energy and none of the rules of the zones contradict each other, allowing for combinations only limited by his own creativity. Roran has no special resistance to his own magic and can suffer any of its effects at any given time unless he centers a zone around his own body or is currently touching a trinket it is centered on, meaning he must be ever-mindful of all the currently active zones lest he cripple his own chances at victory but also allowing for him to actively target himself with his own magic when he can make use of it. This rule is the cause of nearly all of his scars.
Weaponry: The only weapons Roran uses are small titanium ball bearings he carries with him at all times, each about the size of a marble. These metal spheres work perfectly as trinkets to channel his power and can also be the core of their own mobile Gravity Zones, allowing for many different uses of the otherwise mundane, unassuming objects. Roran's favorite uses of the ball bearings are as grenades and ballistics. After creating a zone around one of the ball bearings Roran can throw, roll etc. it and wait until it is right where he wants it to trigger the zone. He can also anchor a tiny zone to one side of a sphere to push it in the preferred direction, simultaneously flicking the sphere and activating its zone to propel it with shocking speed and force, force which will not be lessened until the zone is deactivated either manually or by distance. Roran can even make a second zone around one of these spherical projectiles to make it spin rapidly after flicking it, allowing it to grind away at what it hits like a blunt drill, or continuously create more friction on what it strikes if that can be useful in the given situation.
History: Roran was born to a wealthy family owning several successful companies with the conglomerate headquartered in Diona itself. He lived a slightly sheltered early life, being groomed to be as successful as his parents whether he directly followed in their footsteps or not. Roran was only twelve when he found out quite by accident that his family was corrupt, both his parents and even extended relatives having done many questionable things over the years from underhanded corporate tactics to shady business deals, mercilessly crushing their competition anyway they could. After this a rift formed between the boy and his parents, from then on he did whatever he could to avoid becoming as unscrupulous as they were and even went so far as to try teaching his younger brother and sister not to be like them. Despite his family's seeming lack of morals in the rest of their lives, Roran's mother and father were actually very loving, devoted parents and treated all three of their children well, managing to neither spoil them nor be too harsh and expectant.
So it was that the young man was crushed when not long after his 18th birthday, a freak accident claimed the lives of both his parents and his little brother. Roran's parents left the majority of their personal fortunes to him, though any shares or other control in the companies they ran was left out, making taking care of himself an easy prospect for the young man. He gave everything he had to try raising his little sister but it wasn't enough to satisfy their other relatives, the Áskell family was filled with wealthy, influential and talented individuals, and a particular group of them had decided Roran wasn't up to the task of raising a young girl. There was little the young man could do to resist his family's demands and before long his sister was taken from him. Once he really was on his own Roran devoted himself to trying to control his magic, it was the only thing he had left that was really important to him...and the only meaningful part of his life that he felt he had any real control over. Eventually this single-minded obsession with mastering his power led to Roran signing up for the entrance exams of Diona's Guardian Academy when he truly felt ready.

Name: Ryoko Nakatani Age: 18 Gender: Female
Appearance: Ryoko appears to the world as an attractive and quirky young woman presenting an appearance of both strength and fierce individuality. Standing at average height her build is athletic without being overly muscular and her hair is a shocking shade of bubblegum pink, kept short and slicked back in what would be a severe look if not for the colour. Her brows are the same colour and she sports a silver ring in her left eyebrow as well as silver rings and studs in her ears. Her blue eyes are almost always half lidded, creating the impression that she is sleepy and hardly interested in the world around her, somewhat at odds with her lively appearance.
She has an almost eerily perfect complexion, with a heart shaped face and aquiline nose her features could easily be described as hawk-like, something her slicked back hair does nothing to dissuade.
Typically dressed in designer three piece suits Ryoko creates impressions of style, affluence and masculinity in equal measure. Her favoured colours are dark blues, blacks and crisp whites - allowing her hair to be the flash of colour which brings her ensemble to life. The suits don't do a great deal to highlight any of her 'female attributes', but don't leave her entirely shapeless either. This seems to be her preferred style of dress whether on duty or off. She is always seen wearing a round pair of glasses with a slight pink tint to the glass. Oddly, given her name, Ryoko is very... well, white, displaying no signs of the heritage her name might suggest. Overall her appearance of someone entirely confident and at home in their own skin with little care for how others perceive them.
The reality is quite different. Ryoko really looks very different. Her asian heritage reveals itself in her skin tone, features, brown eyes and black hair. Her hair is shoulder length with very little shape to it and she is several inches shorter than she normally appears, as well as being thinner and more frail looking. One might expect that someone who alters their appearance in the way Ryoko does would be trying to hide some sort of disfigurement or insecurity but when looking at her the first word that would spring to mind is "plain". She has almost no defining characteristics and is the sort of person you would hardly even notice if you passed them in the street. Her clothes are usually muted shades of brown or green and typically very loose fitting or even several sizes too large for her making her appear somewhat like a child wearing her parents clothes. Her eyes are much wider than when she is seen in her other appearance and are probably the only thing even slightly remarkable about her. She could never be described as ugly, but calling her beautiful would be equally as untrue.
Ryoko uses her magic to hide her true appearance and has had so much practice at it that the effort required to maintain the illusion is almost non-existent, but there are times when she is unable to maintain it. The magic is broken if Ryoko is unconscious, regardless of whether she is asleep or knocked out. Any situation where she is required to use every ounce of her ability would necessitate her dropping the illusion so she could fully dedicate to the task at hand. It could also be broken by something which disrupted her concentration beyond the point of reason, such as electrocution or a sufficiently large scare.
Personality: Ryoko is, when she's being herself, not the sort of person most people would find especially captivating. She is naturally more inclined towards introversion and would far rather than other people take the lead in social situations. Often appearing ditsy she finds seemingly trivial things fascinating causing her to be easily derailed and has an almost frighteningly morbid sense of humour. She's no pushover however, when it comes to something she feels is important she can be painfully obstinate, refusing to back down from what she feels is correct.
One of the things she is most protective of is her privacy and she uses a number of methods to make sure people don't learn too much about her. In much the same way that she can alter how people see her she seems able to shift her persona at the drop of a hat, quickly becoming the eccentric life and soul of the party or changing her demeanour to become an intimidating thug. These are just other forms of her natural ability for deception, if someone else is better suited to play a required role in a situation she is more than happy to let them take the lead while she plays the part she loves best - herself.
It could be expected that someone who maintains a fake appearance for themselves would be mortified to have it revealed but Ryoko treats having her true form exposed not as though a shocking secret has been discovered but that the person looking at her is being extremely rude, as if trying to catch a peek at her getting changed. She wears an illusion over herself the same way someone else wears a favourite jacket - it's simply a part of how she wants herself to be seen. Her view on it is she can, so why shouldn't she?
When it comes to how she views the world Ryoko has an odd outlook. She has a fascination with fairy tales and romantic stories and wishes the world was more idyllic, but at the same time is enamoured with the sorts of things other people find ugly or worthless. The line in the sand between these two seemingly conflicting behaviours is quite simple, the difference between people and objects. She wants to live in a world where people are as kind, gallant and true as she feels they should be but when it comes to almost anything else - the weather, buildings or even pieces of junk - she has an attraction towards the unloved or even unlovable. She refuses to accept the world for how many would argue it really is, a strong contributing factor in how her magic has manifested itself.
Magic: Ryoko is an Illusionist, able to create simulacrums of just about anything she is able to imagine. Sights are the easiest thing to create and manipulate, her alterations of her own appearance being a prime example. She can change how something appears, cause something to vanish completely or create the image of something from thin air, complete with information for the other senses to take in to make her illusions as convincing as possible. Her abilities are distinct from someone who can actually manipulate others directly however, she doesn't enter someones mind and cause them to experience things - she creates her illusions in the world and does her best to make them as convincing as possible. The more effort she puts into an illusion the more real it seems but they can never actually make an impact on the world. She could create a fire so perfect someone would scream from the pain of being burned, but they could also pass through the flames without harm. Equally, she could create the sensation of a strong gust of wind, but unless she also went to the trouble of making it appear that things were being blown around it would be obvious that nothing was happening. She can make things look, smell, taste, sound and even feel real, but she can't change reality itself.
Ultimately how much impact her illusions have on someone comes down to the level of detail she puts into them and how susceptible someone is to being fooled in the first place. In combat Ryoko usually relies of distraction and deception. Against enemies she wouldn't have too much difficulty with her preferred approach is to cause outright chaos and confusion, slipping amongst her illusions and dispatching foes quietly. Against another formidable magic user however she is more likely to attempt something more elaborate - one of her favourite tricks being to create the impression that she uses a completely different kind of magic than she really does in order to force her enemy to make a mistake. After all, if they don't understand the nature of what they're fighting then she already has the advantage.
Ryoko can craft her illusions at just about any time, but her odd take on the world and her knowledge that her powers can't actually change anything make it so that her ability to use her magic is enhanced when her own sense of reality is somehow distorted. Her talisman is a set of rose-coloured glasses that alter how she sees the world just enough to let her cast her magic freely. She is fond however of carrying and appearing to use a number of fake talismans, another facet of her strategy of deception in case anyone should try to take her talisman from her in order to weaken her powers.
Weaponry: Because her magic is, at best, only able to convince someone they're harmed when they're not, Ryoko understands that weaponry is essential for her. She carries a large number of throwing knives about her person for emergencies but primarily relies on firearms to cause harm. She carries two pistols on her person, a handgun for primary use and a pocket pistol as backup.
History: Ryoko was raised in less than ideal circumstances. Her father was nowhere to be seen and her mother was an addict of just about anything she could get her hands on, exposing Ryoko to the darker side of society from a very young age. The sorts of people her mother associated with helped Ryoko learn very quickly the importance of biting her tongue, keeping people happy and making herself scarce when the time came. For the most part she had to look after herself, and her mother to a large degree, which often meant stealing food or goods to pawn in order to make ends meet. Her only escape from this difficult life came from the stories she would lose herself in. This love affair started with the strung-out fantastical tales her mother would tell and evolved into a ravenous devouring of any books Ryoko was able to get her hands on, largely educating herself during her early life.
As she grew older Ryoko became continually aware that her life, aside from not being the fairy tale she wished it was, wasn't even what most people would consider normal. She would try to convince her mother to turn her life around but was painfully aware that the woman was too entrenched in her lifestyle at this point to be capable of significant change, so instead turned her attention outward. The problems she faced were a result of the life her mother had brought her into, true, but her mother was herself a victim of the people who preyed upon her weakness. As her powers manifested she struggled with the choice of how to use them. Ultimately she was inspired by the stories of heroism she loved so well and decided to join the Guardians if she was able to in order to make the changes she wanted to see. She scraped by until she was old enough to apply, doing her best to keep her head down and out of trouble.

The Magic of Eleste Magic in the world of Eleste follows a very specific, but highly versatile system combining elements of many different systems to form something quite unique. This information isn’t essential to the world, but I’m including it as an addendum because it could be useful… and also I like it. The System The magic system of Eleste is governed by two sets of rules. The universal rules and the personal rules. That is to say, there are rules that apply to everyone and then also character specific rules that serve in as built in limitations to powers.
As discussed in the OP, the universal rules are as follows. Firstly, there is an enormous array of abilities that can be used through magic, however each mage is limited to one specific area of the vast spectrum of abilities. They can do anything that fits within their own narrow slice of the spectrum, but that is all. Secondly, mages cannot access their slice of the spectrum at all without a talisman. Talismans can be almost any object or type of object and do not have to be a single specific item, although they can be. Some may even carry around multiples of an object as talismans. Contact with a talisman is always required to initiate spellwork although not always to maintain it. The final universal rule, is that a character’s magical discipline is always related to their core personality in some way, although this can be an abstract relationship.
Personal rules are much harder to define. They are the scope of a person’s magic - what they can and can’t do and what is required of them to use their power. Generally, the more powerful or versatile a person’s magic the more complex their personal rules will be. For example, Clarence has a very simple set of abilities and as such the only real rules regarding his power are that it has to be his talismans that become portals, other objects are not affected, and that the portals do not retain the momentum they had as coins and can’t be moved unless Clarence himself moves them. Mages like Roran or Lyle who have highly versatile abilities will usually have many more rules that govern the use of their ability. For example, Roran has to actually calculate the effect of everything he does with his gravity abilities while Lyle’s strengths and weaknesses will change depending on the material properties he absorbs.
In Effect These rules, especially the universal rules, shape and influence how magic actually appears within Eleste.
Every person in the world of Eleste has magic, but it functions in much the same way as a physical muscle would. People require frequent exercise of their abilities to become truly skilled or powerful and although there are those with a greater natural aptitude or with more powerful abilities, it is this training that is the most key aspect of magical development. It is a rare individual, such as Oliver Savas, who is naturally proficient to the point that they could be considered a prodigy.
Also like our muscles, one’s magic isn’t properly developed from birth but develops as people grow. In early childhood, it is extremely rare to see much evidence of magical ability if any. This is because, as per the system’s rules, a person’s magic is tied to the deepest and most core elements of their personality and in one’s earlier years, their personality is still highly fluid and susceptible to change. The ability to enhance physical attributes through channeling tends to appear sooner, but it isn’t until the fundamentals of one’s personality are set that they will gain access to the full scope of their powers. As such it is usually in adolescence that people form a link with a talisman and gain access to their magic at its fullest extent.
An interesting facet to this, is that even after developing magic, peoples’ personalities still retain a degree of fluidity. This means that a person’s character growth can have subtle influences on their abilities over a longer period of time. It also means that in extremely rare cases where a person experiences a sudden and dramatic shift in personality because of a major life event, they can temporarily lose access to the full extent of their magical abilities or even in some cases have their abilities change entirely. In cases where powers change to any noticeable extent, people will typically have to re-explore their capabilities and exercise their new abilities in a similar way as a person going through rehabilitation after an accident may have to retrain their body.
Because of the nature of magic in Eleste, it is not as prominent a factor in everyday life as it may be in other fantasy settings. Attempts at competitive magic events have largely been abandoned outside of Guardian training in most places as it is very difficult to maintain fair or adequate governance based on the sheer differences in people’s abilities. Those who are extremely skilled or powerful might earn regard in the right circles, but surprisingly to some, magic has little influence on fame or fortune for the most part. It is for this reason that while all Guardians are highly respected, and even idolised by many, it is a rare individual Guardian who achieves any kind of personal public prestige. Although, this is also in part because Guardian’s are not encouraged to pursue fame for their abilities as it can potentially jeopardise missions.

aeternum, You're accepted under the proviso that you change his mother's death to a more ordinary case of death in childbirth. See the thing I just posted for the reasoning why.

Flaris PurcellAge: 19
Gender: Female
Appearance: Flaris looks like a young girl of short height and small physique. Her long hair is pale white, unkempt with split ends and her eyes are ashen gray with a sullen vibe to them. Her fingers are almost always wrapped in bandages. She would look pretty, if it weren't for her disheveled state. She always wears an oversized navy gray jacket, even on top of her uniform. She wears dark gray shorts and gray sneakers with unpaired socks.
Personality: If there’s one thing about Flaris, it’s her stoic personality. She always has a blank expression, even in the most inappropriate situations. At most times, she portrays her emotions through words, and in severe times, through actions. She responds in situations with a deadpan reaction, and sometimes replying with brutal honesty. Flaris is an isolated, exclusionary person; friendships do not come to her easily. She is rarely seen smiling and often has an emotionless expression. She is apathetic and somnolent, with little desire to put in any effort into meaningless disciplines or activities.
That being said, she finds a sense of purpose in improving her magic and skills. Contrary to her look, behind her blank stare is a sharp mind. With her wits and calm demeanor, she has the potential to be a great tactician. She finds a solution through procedures, and answers a problem efficiently and practically. Despite all this, she has lot to learn. She tends to underestimate the enemy, making bold and risky decisions. She is also a bad liar, being almost incapable of bluffing. However, because of this, she is fond of accepting her weaknesses and disadvantages, and instead finds a way to overcome them.
She considers her brother, Saint, a role model and an inspiration to enroll in the Academy. Being a well known graduate of the Academy, she aims to eventually reach his level of skill.
Magic: Flaris possesses the magic to manipulate pain. She can, in a broad term, "take away and return" the pain of any living being. She cannot create nor remove pain, but only transfer it. To do this however, she needs to come into physical contact or be at a close proximity to the person before she can use her ability. However, if she cannot find a "donor" for the pain, it would be forced on herself. With her magic, pain manifests itself as threads of crimson light. The brighter and redder the light is, the more intense the pain. Due to the nature of this magic, it has little to no offensive properties. In addition, the stronger the pain is, the harder it is for her to transfer them.
Overtime, with the help of her brother's efforts, she had trained herself to improve her magic. When her magic first manifested, she could only manipulate pain through physical contact, with the light threads sticking on her palms. By practicing on patients, she could "weave" the threads in the air. Currently, she can seemingly carry the threads of light from short distances, though this is much harder for higher degrees of pain.
Her talisman is a silver pocket watch she got as a gift. Similarly, her brother uses the same kind of watch. They were previously owned by their father, passed down to them.
Weaponry: For her safety, she carries a derringer-type pistol that she nonchalantly stuffs in her pockets.
History: Flaris lived a hectic childhood, being born in a cargo ship with her mother being an escaped fugitive. It began when her mother was first imprisoned due to her affiliation with a notorious crime lord, which at that time, was her husband. After his untimely death, she realized she was pregnant with another child. Flaris' mother was then incarcerated for eight months, when she promptly escaped with a few of her husband’s associates. During that time, her brother, Saint, had been on the run, planning his mother's escape with the help of her husband's previous associates. After being chased for nearly a month, they eventually found refuge in a cargo ship that carried ship parts for construction, and this was where Flaris was born. They hijacked the ship, and there was where Flaris was shortly raised.
Her mother eventually joined the business of transporting merchandise and goods. They soon settled in a harbor town, where she joined school at a very young age. Flaris grew up as a quiet child, only answering when questioned, only gave opinions when needed, and generally observed everything with her blank observant eyes. Her loving mother cared for her, and sometimes too much. Her mother’s infamy gave her a solitary childhood, and because of this, she rarely knew any other children besides her brother. Throughout her childhood, they gained a notorious rivalry with each other. Day after day, they would play games and competitions to see who was better, and her brother would win most of the time. Both of them constantly helped each other improve.
During her schooldays, she didn't have that many friends. She regarded her classmates as allies, and would consider them as stepping stones for reaching her goals. Her teachers found her odd, but respected her for being a generally well-behaved kid. Then one day, her brother wanted to join the Guardians because had wanted to veer away from his criminal lineage, and to fight for peace and justice. At that time, she manifested her magic, and wanted to improve it more than ever. It was her chance to be on par with Saint. With her brother's advice, she practiced in the town infirmary, and studied subjects such as biology and medicine. Ever since then, she dreams of reaching the level of her brother and finally ending their silly rivalry.
